What Information Do You Need to Pay a Medical Bill?

Having the right information in front of you turns a frustrating payment into a two-minute task. Here is what you will usually need, and what you should never be asked for.

The usual list

  • The statement, or a photo of it
  • The account or statement number
  • The patient’s name and sometimes date of birth
  • A zip code or similar detail if the page asks for it
  • A payment method, usually a debit or credit card, or sometimes a bank account

If you are paying for someone else

You will need the patient’s statement and the same identifying details. Tell the patient what you paid.

What a payment page does not need

A payment page does not normally need your Social Security number, a password for your email or bank, or your medical history. If a page asks for any of these just to make a payment, close it and call the billing office.

Where to find each item

The account or statement number is usually near the top or on the payment coupon. The due date and amount are near the total. If you cannot find a number, call the billing office.
