Understanding Patient Billing Statements

A billing statement can look like a wall of numbers. Knowing where to look makes it far less intimidating.

The main parts

  • Patient and account information at the top
  • Date of service for each charge
  • Description or code of the service
  • Charges, before insurance
  • Insurance payments and adjustments
  • Patient responsibility, the amount you owe
  • Payment instructions, often at the bottom

Which number to focus on

Look for a line such as “amount due” or “patient responsibility”. Compare it with your Explanation of Benefits.

If something is unclear

Ask the billing office to explain the statement line by line. You can also ask for an itemized bill. See how to check a bill before paying and medical billing terms explained.

Where to pay

The payment address is usually near the bottom. See how to pay a medical bill online.
