Hospital bills are rarely a single bill. A stay or an emergency visit often produces separate statements from the hospital itself and from the physicians, labs and imaging groups who treated you. Paying them online works the same way as any other bill, but organization matters.
Expect more than one bill
The facility bills for the room, nursing and supplies. Doctors who treated you may bill separately, and so may anesthesia, radiology and laboratory groups. Each statement may point to a different payment page and arrive on a different day. Our article on doctor bills versus hospital bills explains why.
Match each bill to its payment page
Use the address on each statement. Do not assume that paying one bill covers another. A simple list with the provider, amount, due date and payment address for each bill keeps things straight.
Hospital patient portals
Many hospitals offer a patient portal with a billing section. You may need to register using a code from your paperwork. If you already have an account, look for “billing” or “pay a bill”.
Check the bill before paying
Hospital bills can be large and complex. Ask for an itemized bill, compare it with your insurer’s Explanation of Benefits and ask about financial assistance or payment plans if the amount is hard to manage. The federal government explains some billing protections at CMS.gov/nosurprises.
